Edith Cowan was born and raised in Western Australia on 2 August 1861. The second daughter of Kennet Brown and Mary Eliza Dircksey. She married James Cowan when she was eighteen years old. Edith was the first female parliamentarian in Australia . She was one of Western Australia's first female magistrates in the children's Court. She also introduced the women's Legal Status Bill .
Cowan died on 9 June 1932. After her death , the Edith Cowan Memorial Clock was unveiled at the entrance to Perth's Kings Park .Cowan's portrait was featured on an Australian postage stamp in 1975 and she now also appears on the Australian $50 note .
